Escape winter's wrath with these nourishing skincare must-haves.
Thanks to the cold, many Canadians are suffering from chapped lips and cheeks, dry patches and inflamed skin. According to the Canadian Dermatology Association, “winter brings with it many great things (but) it also has a knack (for) leaving our skin and hair completely dehydrated.”
Skin in particular is vulnerable to serious damage in the winter, notes the site. “Whether it’s the beating sun or freezing temperatures, just like summer months, we need to take the necessary precautions to protect our skin in the winter.”
“Winter can be harsh on your skin, often leading to dryness, irritation, and inflammation,” says Alyssa Rolnick, co-founder of Zax’s Original, known for its line of pharmacist-developed, first aid and therapeutic skin care products. “Taking care of your skin during the winter months helps maintain its health and resilience, allowing it to flourish as the seasons change into spring.”
How to care for your skin in winter
What can we do to protect our skin during cold weather season?
The experts say learn to scrub off dead or dry skin with gentle exfoliants, avoid hot water when showering (both cold and hot water dry out skin) and keep your showers to a minimum. And always, use a sunscreen product, regardless of what time of year it is.
“Using skincare with effective natural ingredients can make a significant difference, especially for conditions like eczema, redness, windburn, and chapped skin,” says Rolnick, adding that ingredients like “oatmeal, aloe vera, coconut oil, pine bark extract and vitamin E have soothing, anti-inflammatory properties, making them ideal for winter skincare.”
What should consumers be looking for in skin care during winter months? Vancouver-based Shoppers Beauty Pro Tisha Naicker recommends including a hydrating step into your daily routine. Make sure it’s specific to your skin type, adds Shoppers Beauty Pro Carrie Whitehead, advising that “when considering a new winter skin care product, be sure to choose a moisturizer that is suited to your skin type so that you are not compromising on the results you are getting.”
