It’s the season of thankfulness, so in that spirit, take this time to be thankful for your skin! Your skin is the largest organ in your body and protects you from head to toe. Here are four great reasons to say thank you to your skin.
Our skin keeps us healthy by serving as a barrier to keep pathogens out of the body. Your skin comes in contact every day with the world around you, environmental pollutants, dirt, dust, grim and even harmful UV rays from the sun. It is your bodies first line of defence. So, cleansing your skin daily, wearing sunscreen regularly and even doing an exfoliating body and face wash from time to time are all ways you can thank your skin.
Our skin can be an external indicator of our internal health. Sometimes what’s going on inside your body such as viruses, bacteria and possible infections, can be seen through your skin’s health. For example, redness, irritation, swelling, a bump, or even a bruise can indicate that something is going on inside your body. Observe your skin from time to time and if you notice something out of the ordinary, take the time to have it looked at.
Our skin is our touch-sensory organ. Your skin is full of nerve endings that help you feel things such as cold, heat, pain and pleasure. Our skin connects us to others through skin-to-skin contact and affection and lets us know when something is hot or cold to touch. Without feeling, what would life be like?
Our skin tells the story of our ancestry and where we came from. There is a strong connection between ancestry and physical appearance. You can often infer your ancestry from your physical features such as the colour of your skin and structure of your face. Your genes play a large role in your skin’s overall health. For example, is your skin light or dark, oily or dry, sensitive, do you have a family history of skin conditions, did your parents age well? Once you understand your skin, you can follow a skincare regime that is best for you.
